Annie Ernaux’s home movies were shot on Super 8 between 1972 and 1981, before she became a famous writer. The clips are accompanied by texts written and read by Arnaux herself. The story that unfolds interweaves the personal and collective dimensions, just as her novels do.
COMMENTARY
Rabiye Kurnaz, a loving mother and housewife of Turkish descent from Bremen, and Bernhard Docke, a human rights lawyer, decide to join forces to fight for the release of Murat, son of Rabiye, from Guantanamo. Side by side, they make it all the way to the Supreme Court, lodging a lawsuit against George W. Bush. Bernhard takes care of Rabiye, and she makes him laugh, heart and soul. In the end, against all odds, something extraordinary happens. The film won two awards at the Berlin Film Festival: Best Screenplay for Laila Stieler and Best Actress for Meltem Kaptan.
ANNIE ERNAUX
Born in 1940 in Lillebonne, Annie Ernaux is one of the leading lights of French literature today. Her novels include A Man’s Place, Happening (on which the film of the same name by Audrey Diwan, which won the Golden Lion at Venice, was based), and The Years. She won the 2022 Nobel Prize for Literature.
DAVID ERNAUX-BRIOT
Born in 1968, David Ernaux-Briot, the son of Annie and Philippe Ernaux, works in television, creating science programs. This is their first film.
DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT
In re-viewing our super eight films, it occurred to me that they comprised not only a family archive but a testimony to the pastimes, lifestyle and aspirations of a social class in the decade after 1968. (Annie Ernaux)
