COMMENTARY
Directed by Steven Spielberg, The Fabelmans was written by Spielberg and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Tony Kushner, a long-time collaborator of the director, whose screenplays for Lincoln and Munich were both nominated for an Oscar®. The film tells the story of 16-year-old Sammy Fabelman who, growing up in post-WWII Arizona, discovers the magic of cinema and its power of salvation. The role of aspiring young director Sammy Fabelman is played by Gabriel LaBelle (The Predator, American Gigolo the series); his mother Mitzi is played by Michelle Williams (4-time Oscar® nominee), his father Burt is Paul Dano, and Seth Rogen plays Bennie Loewy, Burt’s best friend and “surrogate uncle” to his children, while Oscar® nominee Judd Hirsch is Boris, his mother’s uncle.
STEVEN SPIELBERG
Born in Cincinnati in 1946, Steven Spielberg indelibly marked the collective imaginary in the late twentieth century with films such as ET, or the Indiana Jones tetralogy. An enfant prodige, he filmed his first feature-length film for TV, Duel, in 1971. Jaws (1975) represents the birth of the modern blockbuster. In his career, he has alternated spectacular entertainment films with equally wonderful films of sweeping social and historical breadth (Schindler’s List).
DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT
For me, this film is a way of bringing my mom and dad back. It also brought my sisters, Annie, Susie, and Nancy closer to me than I ever thought possible. For that alone, it was worth making the film.
