The 19th edition of the Rome Film Fest returns to the prisons of Lazio with a program of screenings and talks that involve inmates and city residents alike.

Today, Monday, October 21st at 2 pm, Rebibbia Prison’s Germana Stefanini Women’s Ward will host Il treno dei bambini by Cristina Comencini. The Roman filmmaker and screenwriter has made an epic, stirring film based on Viola Ardone’s novel of the same name, a journey into poverty, ignorance, and prejudice, but also solidarity and renewal in post-war Italy, as seen by a boy torn between two mothers.

The Film Fest is back at Rebibbia Prison’s New Ward as well, with three different events.

The program kicks off on Wednesday, October 23rd at 4 pm, in the prison’s new Meta theater, with the screening of a documentary called Ricordo di Enrico Maria Salerno 1994-2024.

The next day, at the same time, Fest audiences and inmates can catch U.S. Palmese by the Manetti Bros. In this romantic/sports comedy set in Palmi, Calabria, with scenes in Milan and Paris, sports and personalities collide, with characters and their loyalties, flaws, and a zest for getting even who all coalesce in the end and re-establish a balance. The two directors will be on hand to introduce the screening.

On Friday, October 25th, at 4 pm, the film to watch is Eroici! 100 anni di passione e racconti di sport di Giuseppe Marco Albano. On the prestigious occasion of the one-hundredth anniversary of the Corriere dello Sport, the documentary explores the deep essence of sports, a veritable social and cultural unifier, and the evolution in the way they are practiced and reported. The director Giuseppe Marco Albano and screenwriter Shadi Cioffi will introduce the film.

And on Thursday, October 24th at 2 pm, the Latina Penitentiary presents Paradiso in vendita by Luca Barbareschi, who sets on the island of Filicudi a comedy of characters, mores and politics, the story of an eternal challenge between kindred and pugnacious cultures, of conquerors conquered and battling townspeople, in the best tradition of Italian-style comedy.

The program wraps up on Friday, October 25th, at 3:30 pm, at the Casal del Marmo juvenile detention facility, with a screening of U.S. Palmese by the Manetti Bros.
