In the United States, a country pervaded by racism and discrimination, a coming-of-age tale is set during the 1980 presidential elections. Paul is twelve years old, a budding artist, with two people he is really close to: his best-friend, a Black American, and his paternal grandfather.

Born in New York in 1969, James Gray made his directorial debut in 1994, with a film in which he comes to terms with his Jewish roots, Little Odessa. After two more masterful noir films (The Yards and We Own the Night), he became known as one of the most versatile and sophisticated contemporary American filmmakers, excelling in romantic comedy (Two Lovers), historical drama (The Immigrant, The Lost City of Z), and science fiction (Ad Astra).
DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT
I did my all to make the most personal and honest film I could come up with. I remember jotting down four words on a piece of paper and then sticking them on the camera, as a warning to myself: “Love. Warmth. Irony. Pain.” And in this film, pain takes many different forms.
