“The jury worked meticulously and with conviction, like an orchestra,” said Ettore Scola during the awards ceremony, presenting the Popular Jury, seated in the orchestra pit, which awarded the official prizes of the RomeFilmFest. “The jurors saw all of the films,” added Scola, “and discussed them even heatedly. Some of them have bandages only because they tripped on the steps, not because they fought it out”.
The ties between Izobrajaya Zhertvy – Playing the Victim by Kirill Serebrennikov – winner of the Marco Aurelio Best Film Award – and the theatre are numerous and profound. The film is based on the eponymous play by the Presnyakov brothers (presented at the Edinburgh Festival), a dark version of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, and is proof that it is possible to adapt classic works to a contemporary setting in a natural and suitable way while retaining the story’s origins. As the director himself said, “The film’s main character Valya feels, like Hamlet, to be living an inner break with the modern…
Shane Meadows, winner of the Special Jury prize for This is England, thanked audiences and the RomeFilmFest: “Twelve months ago, the young actor in this film was going through a dramatic period in his life and had no chances. A year later, he is getting a prize with the others that could change his life. Thank you.” One of the collateral prizes, the L.A.R.A. Award for Best Italian Performer (of the Libera Associazione Rappresentanti Artisti, presided over by Moira Mazzantini), chosen from among the Italian films of all the sections, have been awarded to Ninetto Davoli for his turn…
Upon receiving the Best Actress Award for her role in Le Voyage en Arménie – Armenia by Robert Guédiguian, Ariane Ascaride said, in Italian: “You cannot imagine how happy I am for this award because it is an award that goes to a film made in small country that I love and that adopted me. Receiving it here in Italy, which is the country of my grandparents and father, makes me feel like I am finally coming home”.
Giorgio Colangeli, winner of the Best Actor award for Alessandro Angelini’s L´aria salata, said: “This is an extraordinary moment for an actor like myself who works on the sidelines. The decision to give me the award is a wonderful sign for those of us who work in the shadows but tenaciously. I would like to call to the stage director Alessandro Angelini, whom I thank along with his co-screenwriter Angelo Carbone”.
The Best Film Award at the RomeFilmFest has gone to Izobrajaya Zhertvy – Playing the Victim by Kirill Serebrennikov. The Russian director’s first comments were: “I’ve been watching Italian cinema since I was a child, it’s in my head and in my heart. The greatest actors became my friends and playmates, just like Ettore Scola who is here with me now. I never imagined winning this kind of prize in Roma. This film is a film for Russia and for Russians. Because we still believe that cinema can change people’s way of thinking and consciences. I am happy to have…

George Clooney has accepted to be Ambassador for Human Rights of Prisoners for the city of Rome and the Communità of Sant’Egidio. Most modern societies are based on certain basic rights. The right to a fair trial. The right to face your accuser and the charges against you. The presumption of innocence. The human treatment of even our most repugnant. Certain important landmarks – the Magna Carta, the writ of habeas corpus and the Geneva Convention – were all designed to make sure that we, as a society, were better than the reactions of individuals. This is certainly one of…
