“L’Arminuta” by Giuseppe Bonito

Adapted from the best-selling novel by Donatella Di Pietrantonio, which won the Premio Campiello 2017 literary award.
Summer 1975. A thirteen-year-old girl is returned to the family she did not know she belonged to. She has suddenly lost everything from her previous life: a comfortable home and the exclusive love reserved to an only child, as she is catapulted into an unfamiliar world.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT
Thanks to the novel by Donatella Di Pietrantonio, I came to know this 13-year-old girl whose name we will never know, just her nickname, l’Arminuta, which in the dialect of the Abruzzo region means the returned. Everything is strongly polarised in this story: the coastal city and the mainland city, modernity and the archaic past, bourgeois comfort and rural poverty, correct Italian as it is spoken on television and the thick dialect spoken in the new house. And she, l’Arminuta, is stuck in the middle, always one thing and the other at the same time, the daughter of two mothers and none. The film, like the novel, is about one year in the life of this girl on the threshold of adolescence, a time which will mark her life forever, in which she will feel pain and harshness as well as the sometimes fierce love, sweetness and beauty that life can bring us. I would like the narrative to convey two things: the Arminuta’s gaze, and the magma of lacerating feelings in this story. The film addresses one of our deepest fears, losing the people our happiness depends upon. It is the story of the clash between destiny and human will.
