During the Rome Film Fest, in the minimalist modernist architecture of Eur, Mazda will offer the exciting experience of a fantastic Drive In. During this event, a drive-in movie theatre will be set up in the square in front of the Palazzo dei Congressi, with room for 60 automobiles, where passengers will be able to watch films screened on a giant 13 x 5,5 metre movie screen.
The inauguration of the drive-in will be attended by 50 owners of MX-5s coming in with their cars from all over Europe. The evenings dedicated to the audiences of the Rome Film Fest, with free admission in one’s own car, will be held on October 16th and 17th at 9 pm. Reservation is required via email (drivein@romacinemafest.org) and is subject to availability, starting from 48 hours before the screening.

Il giorno della civetta (Mafia) is a film directed in 1968 by Damiano Damiani, adapted from the novel by Leonardo Sciascia, starring Franco Nero, Claudia Cardinale and an international cast. The exhibition presents a journey into the film with 160 images never shown before, as seen through the eyes of the set photographer Enrico Appetito; but it is also a tribute to Leonardo Sciascia’s far-sightedness and civil commitment against the Mafia. The exhibition includes the Ritratti section (Portraits) in the Foyer Sinopoli, and the Set and Behind the Scenes sections in the EXPO space of the Auditorium Parco della Musica. The images are accompanied by 50 years of news reports about the Mafia in Italy. As part of the exhibition, on Friday October 21st, at 7 pm, in the AuditoriumExpo, there will be a presentation of the book titled “L’incantesimo delle civette” by Amedeo LaMattina (published by edizioni e/o), a coming-of-age novel set in a small town in Sicily, at the time when Damiani brought his set on location there. the event will feature the author and readings by Lara Crinò. “Production, project and organization by: ETICAARTE with the Enrico Appetito Historic Archives of Film Photography. COMENCINI FOTOGRAFO: IL DOPOGUERRA RACCONTATO IN 50 IMMAGINI

Before beginning his career as a filmmaker and becoming the great master of cinema that he was, Luigi Comencini was a reporter and photographer. As a photo-journalist in the 1940s, he told the story of his native northern Italy, Milan and the Padania area with its ruins and reconstruction, its past and its new modernity. He did with the sensitivity of the artist and architect that he was, with attention to the spaces and buildings as well as the people who lived there or were simply passing through.
At the Auditorium Parco della Musica, the Rome Film Fest, in collaboration with the Cineteca di Milano, is hosting a precious exhibition of 50 photographs taken by the director between 1945 and 1948, all of them black and white, discovered purely by chance and saved from the oblivion of time. The images bear witness to the difficult and precarious post-war years, and at the same time anticipate some of the themes that were most important to Comencini: his sensibility towards children and poverty, his ability to tell a story within a frame.
The photos are also the subject of a book, “Luigi Comencini. Italia 1945-1948”, published by Humboldt Books, with essays by Cristina Comencini, Giovanna Calvenzi, Giorgio Gosetti, Mario Sesti, Antonio Monda and Matteo Pavesi.

In Between Art Film, a production company founded by Beatrice Bulgari, brings the audiovisual installation Magnificent Obsession, by the Swiss artist and filmmaker Matthias Brunner, to the Rome Film Fest, in a joint collaboration with the Magazzino Art Gallery.
The artwork, which belongs to the collections of the Kunst Haus in Zurich, is a four-screen projection of fragments of 36 masterpieces of European and American film from the 1950s and ‘60s, brilliantly assembled by the artist. Magnificent Obsession takes viewers on an enthralling and surprising journey to discover the bonds between film and literature in those two postwar decades, when major novelists like Marguerite Duras, Alberto Moravia and Raymond Queneau were engaged in a visual dialogue with

exponents of the French New Wave such as Claude Chabrol and Francois Truffaut, and the American and European filmmakers who drew inspiration from them: Alfred Hitchcock, Elia Kazan, Louis Bunuel, and Jean-Pierre Melville. While viewers are surrounded by moving images, they may only listen to the soundtrack of one of the films on the screens. In fact, Brunner has also selected the segment of each soundtrack that he considers most significant, not synchronized with the images on the screens, therefore, which makes for fresh and unexpected associations and a genial choreography of images which is pure visual poetry.

MIGRARTI. CINEMA WITHOUT BORDERS

“MigrArti. Cinema without borders” is the event organized by the Rome Film Fest, the MIBACT / MIGRARTI project, Scuola di Donato, the Scuola Di Donato Parents Association and Apollo 11: six nights of cinema and events in the most multi-ethnic of neighbourhoods, the Esquilino. From October 17th to 22nd, every evening at 9 pm, the Scuola Di Donato, near Piazza Vittorio, opens to the neighbourhood, in a 100-seat movie theatre, for the screening of six films that, with different languages and approaches, talk about the condition of migrants, the difficulties and dreams of those who leave their native countries, the ambition to become integrated in a new reality. The programme, curated by Valerio Carocci, includes: America, America by Elia Kazan (1963, 174′), My Beautiful Laundrette by Stephen Frears (1985, 97′), Gegen die Wand by Fatih Akin (Head On, 2004, 121′), L’Orchestra di Piazza Vittorio by Agostino Ferrente (2006, 93′), La mia classe by Daniele Gaglianone (My Class, 2014, 92′), Alì ha gli occhi azzurri by Claudio Giovannesi (Alì Has Blue Eyes, 2012, 94′). There will also be a screening of the short films that won the MigrArti project, promoted by MIBACT. The objective is to create a strong growing bond between the Rome Film Fest and the entire city, involving audiences from the centre of the city to the suburbs, to generate a debate on the themes of reception, cultural cross-pollination and against every form of discrimination. CRITICAL CONDITIONS: : LOVING CINEMA AND WRITING ABOUT FILMS IN THE DIGITAL AGE

Never, especially since the advent of the Internet, has access to films been as widespread as it is nowadays. Yet never, because of the crisis facing print media, has giving stability, meaning, and purpose to the work of people who write about cinema been as uncertain and daunting a challenge as it is today. The Web has exponentially multiplied the practice of expressing often amateurish opinions and ideas about films, yet never has the possibility of recommending a film, of leading a reader into its secret energy or its capacity to stir the soul, seemed so ineffectual in competing with marketing strategies, or the intense mediatization of our existence. Is there any space left to defend, to consolidate, and to innovate for those of us who have spent long perfecting our writing to explore, probe, and understand the inexhaustible experience of seeing a film, personally and with the readers? And will the diffusion and supremacy of the audio-visual language in the digital world lead us towards a future in which a film review will consist of images and sounds – i.e. will the film critic use the language of cinema itself, just as the literary critic uses the language of novels? The Rome Film Fest organizes a panel for discussion, information and debate that will feature some of the major foreign film critics (A.O.Scott for the “New York Times” and Justin Chang for the “Los Angeles Times”) and a polyphony of voices from the Italian press, web, film magazines and universities. From written reviews to video-critiques, from film clips that spotlight movie critics to a conversation on the very function of the critic, which may well have changed far more profoundly that cinema itself over the past thirty years, this event, curated by Alberto Crespi and Mario Sesti, will attempt to illuminate the fate and reasons of those who have turned their love for cinema into a profession.
THE ROME FILM FEST IN REBIBBIA

The Auditorium in Rebibbia Prison opens up to the Rome Film Fest. From October 16th to 20th, the Rome Film Fest at Rebibbia will host four international events, open to inmates and outsiders: an experiment in integration through Cinema and Video-Theatre. Afternoon and evening screenings, great films, and on October 20th, the world premiere of a show streamed live from a Prison. Connected directly with the Auditorium of the MAXXI and online, a new cult by the actor-inmates, who previously starred in the film Cesare deve morire, and now tackle Dante’s Inferno in full-HD, directed by Fabio Cavalli. At the end of the event, the inmate-actors will address the audience of the MAXXI in live streaming (open with accreditation in both venues). Moderators will be Edoardo Albinati and Mario Sesti. The event is made possible by the collaboration between the Fondazione Cinema per Roma, the Department of Penitentiary Administration and the Department of Philosophy, Communication and Drama of the Università degli Studi Roma Tre, and is produced by La Ribalta – Centro Studi Enrico Maria Salerno, which for the past fifteen years has shared and created prestigious international theatre and films with the inmates of the Roman prison: from Cesare deve morire by the Taviani brothers to the most recent hit Naufragio con spettatore – again starring Cavalli’s actor-inmates – winner of a Special Jury Mention for the MigrArti award of the 73rd Venice International Film Festival. If the purpose of a prison is to trace back one’s steps from the “bad life” to the “good line”, to become an opportunity for a person who has made a mistake to redeem himself, then the empty time of the sentence must be filled with opportunities: education, training, work. There is room for art as well. Cinema, in 24 photograms per second, moves reality and life, illuminates the darkness. Every year at the Auditorium of Rebibbia, thousands of people aged 15 and over walk in freely to attend the productions by the inmates. And ever since the cameras have begun to work behind the bars, the inmates have been enthralled by the “behind the scenes” action of an art that generally can only be seen after all is said and done. Hence the desire to watch good films, to meet the protagonists, to engage in discussion. Cinema has the power to weave different destinies together. THE DRAMA OF REFUGEES
In collaboration with UNHCR, the United Nation’s refugee agency, the Rome Film Fest presents he screening at the MAXXI of the documentary If I Close My Eyes by Francesca Mannocchi and Alessio Romenzi. The film tells the story of the life of Syrian refugees in Lebanon, and more particularly the stories of the children who cannot go to school, forced to work for a few dollars a day, child refugees who have lost their basic human right to an education. Lebanon is a country with a population of 4 million that is now home to 2 million Syrian refugees. These numbers are a humiliation for Europe, which with its five hundred million inhabitants continues to bicker about welcoming 1 million refugees, and considers immigration to be a threat rather than an opportunity.

RAI AT THE ROME FILM FEST
Rai returns to the Rome Film Fest to report on all the news of the 11th edition. The public radio and television service will offer full coverage of the event, including in-depth focuses, interviews and dedicated reports.
RaiNews24 will offer live coverage of the events on the Red Carpet and the productions in competition, broadcasting an ample overview of the fest with on-the-scene reports and interviews.
Rai Movie will report on the events of the day in its Roma Daily feature and in a special broadcast of Movie Mag from the spaces of the fest on October 19th.
Rai Radio2, the official radio of the Rome Film Fest, will be reporting live on the social networks, on the Radio Rai App, in streaming and “on the air” from the Auditorium Parco della Musica with the voices of Giovanni Veronesi and Max Cervelli and their programme “Non è un paese per giovani”. Saturday October 22nd, Lillo, Greg and Alex Braga will be on the air with a special edition of ‘610’.
Rai Radio 3 will also be broadcasting live from the Auditorium every day with the Hollywood Party show, which will talk about the event from every possible point of view. Radio 1 and Isoradio will also give space to the voices of the protagonists with live broadcasts and special features.
DRIVE-IN
In the EUR district, on the square in front of the Palazzo dei Congressi, visitors are invited to relive the experience of a drive-in movie: thanks to Mazda, for the fourth year in a row, the Mazda MX-5 Drive-in will be built next to the Fest and the Fondazione Cinema per Roma. On a total surface area of 4,600 square metres, passengers in 100 automobiles will enjoy the screening of films on a giant 25 x 10-meter screen. This leap back in time will catapult the spectators into the atmosphere of “Happy Days” and “American Graffiti”, to perpetuate the magic of cinema. On the night of the Drive-in’s inauguration, 50 MX-5 owners from all around Europe will come down in their cars to participate in the event. Mazda will also renew its collaboration with the Rome Film Fest by supplying 50 automobiles to drive its protagonists to the red carpet. Furthermore, Mazda will build the 800-seat Mazda Cinema Hall at the Cinema Village as well as the Mazda Lounge, which will welcome directors and actors for interviews.

An initiative promoted by AFI, ANICA, FAPAV, MPA, NUOVOIMAIE, SIAE and UNIVIDEO, all partners of EMCA – European Multimedia Copyright Alliance – with the aim of getting schools and the film and music industries involved in the issue of the value of creativity and the safeguarding of creators. This presentation of the results of the EMCA educational project “Rispettiamo la Creatività” [We Respect Creativity] is the perfect occasion to illustrate the benefits of an educational campaign that has involved over 80,000 students to date. The event includes a first-time look at the new videos for the campaign IO FACCIO FILM [I Make Films], which promotes the filmmaking professions. Thanks to the first-hand accounts of artists and professionals in the field, the goal is to share the knowledge, passion and respect for the work that goes into producing a film or a song, with the audience.

BLAXPLOITALIAN 100 YEARS OF BLACKNESS IN ITALIAN CINEMA

“United Artists for Italy” is an event dedicated to pluralism and inclusion in the Italian film industry in which many Italian artists, of various origins, meet for the first time to promote practices to recognize greater opportunities for artistic talents, whatever their origin. The event will be preceded by the Italian premiere, open to the public, of the documentary Blaxploitalian Cent’Anni di Afrostorie nel cinema italiano directed by Fred Kuwornu, which tells the story of over 500 actors and directors of African descent who worked in the Italian film industry between 1915 and the present.
REMEMBERING DONALD RANVAUD
The Rome Film Fest will commemorate the great producer Donald Ranvaud, prematurely deceased on September 5th, 2016. Ranvaud dedicated his life to the seventh art: he taught History of Cinema at the University of Warwick in the 1970s, and was later a critic for “Framework” magazine, a writer of essays, as well as a director (with Ninni Bruschetta and Francesco Calogero) of the “atypical” documentary Visioni private (Private Screening), and finally, from 1989 to his death, a producer: he made films in 4 continents in the course of his 27-year career, helping to reveal the cinema of countries such as China (with Goodbye My Concubine by Chen Kaige) and Brazil (with Central do Brasil by Walter Salles and City of God by Fernando Meirelles). For his last project, as yet unreleased, entitled Sweet Democracy, a political satire halfway between fiction and documentary directed by Michele Diomà, Ranvaud secured Nobel Prize-winner Dario Fo for the cast.

The Worldwide Fan Event for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them will be held live on the opening night of the 11th Rome Film Fest, in London and Rome simultaneously, at 8:30 p.m. London time and 9:30 p.m. in Italy. Viewers can watch a Livestreamed Q&A featuring the entire cast of the film, along with the world premiere of exclusive special contents for the film. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them begins in 1926. Newt Scamander has just completed a global excursion to find and document an extraordinary array of magical creatures. Arriving in New York for a brief stopover, he might have come and gone without incident, were it not for a No-Maj (American for Muggle) named Jacob, a misplaced magical case, and the escape of some of Newt’s Fantastic Beasts, which could spell trouble for both the wizarding and No-Maj worlds.
A DENUNCIATION OF PEDOPHILIA
The Rome Film Fest hosts a screening of the short Coco, a cinematic cri de coeur against pedophilia, directed by Veronica Succi. The short film, shot in studios and the Roman neighborhood Pigneto, recounts the life and feelings of Coco, alias Santiago Jimenez Barrios, a forty-year-old female transexual of Latin American origin. It looks at her childhood, her particular trauma and her changes, thanks to art. To overcome that trauma, the protagonist, played by Antonia San Juan (who attracted international attention in Pedro Almodovar’s All About My Mother, in the role of Agrado) takes refuge in a colorful universe of dance and sequin dresses that will prompt her to become a quick-change artist. The short is a spin-off of the feature film Parvus. The screening of Coco will be followed by a debate featuring, among others, Veronica Succi and Don Fortunato Di Noto, founder of the Meter Association for which Succi has directed two commercials.
BLAZING SADDLES, A SPECIAL SCREENING
The Rome Film Fest has decided to open its doors to a charity benefit. Not far from the Auditorium, on the hill of Villa Glori, is a group home that for many years has assisted a community of patients suffering from AIDS: it is the Caritas centre, founded in the 1980s by Don Luigi Di Liegro. This year, the Rome Film Fest wishes to share one of its events with the community and its guests. Inside the movie room of the group home, there will be a screening of one of the most popular films in its line-up of westerns, Blazing Saddles by Mel Brooks.
SIAE FOR ITALIAN CINEMA
SIAE stands by the side of Cinema, helping to develop many of the projects involving the creativity of young people, whom it sustains through every phase of their career by offering a showcase for their creativity at one of the most important festivals. This year the Italian Society of Authors and Editors (SIAE) will be at the Rome Film Fest, an event that has captured the attention of audiences in the Capital City for ten years, in support of I LOVE GAI – Giovani Autori Italiani. The I LOVE GAI competition, dedicated to young Italian authors and directors under the age of forty, is the product of a collaboration between SIAE and Lightbox.
