TRAME D’AUTORE | Six videos between art and literature
Auditorium Parco della Musica – Studio 2 – Studio 3 | October 26 – November 5 | Monday through Friday 5pm –9pm | Saturday, Sunday and November 1st 5pm –10pm
Contemporary art comes under the spotlight of the Rome Film Fest. The Auditorium Parco della Musica will feature the exhibition “Trame d’Autore”, a project promoted and conceived by Simona Marchini, which presents six videos stemming from the interaction between six artists, six writers and six directors. The works by Pizzi Cannella, Hidetoshi Nagasawa, Roberto Pietrosanti, Marina Sagona, Giuseppe Salvatori and Jannis Kounellis (the first posthumous tribute to this great artist) dialogue with the writings of Emanuele Trevi, Claudio Damiani, Jhumpa Lahiri, Marco Lodoli, Aurelio Picca and Elena Stancanelli. The resulting narration morphs into image in the six short films that will be screened in the spaces of Studio 2 and Studio 3, which will also display the works that served as the dramaturgical elements. In her twin role as actress and art dealer, Simona Marchini sought to bring together the languages of visual arts and literature to shape a third fusional language, that of auteur videos. The backstage photos by Dino Ignani, will be on exhibit at La Nuova Pesa (via del Corso 530, Roma) for the duration of the Rome Film Fest.

I VOLTI DI TOTÒ
Auditorium Parco della Musica – Foyer Sinopoli | 26 October – 5 November
To salute the restoration of Miseria e nobiltà by Mario Mattoli, the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia (Experimental Cinematography Centre) has chosen a series of remarkable photographs of Totò from its photography collections, selected from his most famous films and others perhaps less known to the general public. The Neapolitan actor, one of the undisputed greats in the history of Italian cinema, theatre and comedy, will be in the heart of the Rome Film Fest, in the Foyer Sinopoli, for the entire duration of the festival: a way to remember, and with a smile to rediscover, the many faces of the iconic Totò, in a tribute to the great Italian comic actor fifty years after his death.
AFRICA, YOU AREN’T NOTHING TO ME
Exhibitions, events and a short film starring Remo Girone, Paolo Briguglia and Lorenzo Lavia, so we can all say in chorus: “Africa, you aren’t NOTHING to me!”. This is the slogan of the campaign created by Sabina Leoni for Amref Italia’s sixtieth anniversary, to be presented at the 12th Rome Film Fest, for which Amref is a charity partner. The short film looks at that grey area where fake news and humanitarian organizations meet, examined by an odd character, David Troll (Paolo Briguglia). The premiere of the short film directed by Antonio Costa and produced by 8Production is being held by Amref at the Teatro Studio Gianni Borgna, and will be followed by a documentary by the great filmmaker Werner Herzog, devoted to Amref founders, The Flying Doctors of East Africa.
In the foyer of the Sala Petrassi, Amref is also exhibiting twenty-one faces of its Africa campaigns, cultural figures who have endorsed Amref, artfully portrayed here by photographer Francesco Cabras. The twenty-one personalities declaring their love for Africa are: Fiorella Mannoia, Roberto Saviano, PIF, Giobbe Covatta, Erri De Luca, Neri Marcorè, Alex Braga, Lillo and Greg, Sergio Cammariere, Riccardo Iacona, Alessandro Preziosi, Claudia De Lillo, Cecile, Ludovico Fremont, Remo Girone, Paolo Briguglia, Corrado Augias, Marco Baliani, Lella Costa and Sveva Sagramola.

FENDI STUDIOS | A digitally immersive journey in the relationship between the Roman house and the Cinema world
Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana, Roma | October 27, 2017 – March 25, 2018 | free admission
FENDI celebrates its long-lasting bond with the world of cinema through an innovative and surprising exhibition entitled FENDI STUDIOS, which explores this unique relationship in a digitally and immersive way. The exhibition is held at Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana, the headquarters of the Roman Maison, which is itself linked to cinema history, as it has been stage to movies like Boccaccio ‘70, Titus and Zoolander II. The exhibition showcases different studios composed by a series of interactive movie scenes featuring films for which FENDI has manufactured outfits, accessories and fur pieces through the years, to name a few: Evita, The Devil Wears Prada and Grand Budapest Hotel. This collection of costumes is displayed and presented in the several areas of the exhibition, which also includes a real cinema space where films will be screened every day through a special program. FENDI STUDIOS is an invitation to discover, in a modern and contemporary way, the natural passion between FENDI and the cinema, made of glamour and highly creative dynamics. The exhibition lets the visitors immerse into a digital experience where they can interact and reinvent the movies, by entering “into the scenes” and being themselves the protagonists, taking selfies and sharing this unique experience in real time.

THE REBIBBIA PRISON
Auditorium di Rebibbia N.C. – Sala Cinema “Melograno” at Rebibbia Femminile, Rome | October 30 – November 3
Once again this year, the Rome Film Fest symbolically breaks down the wall between city and penitentiary. From October 30 to November 3, it will be hosting five international film events in Rebibbia N.C. (the prison’s new building) and in Rebibbia Femminile (its women’s ward), open to both inmates and outsiders: an experiment in integration using cinema and video theater, with afternoon and evening screenings of major films.
Rebibbia Nuovo Complesso (New Annex) – Auditorium
The program kicks off on October 30 with the premiere of Hamlet in Rebibbia, a full-HD livestreamed performance at the prison screening at the Auditorium of the MAXXI, the Teatro della Tosse in Genoa and numerous other Italian theaters and prisons. It is a new cult show from the inmate/actors who earlier starred in the Taviani Brother’s Caesar Must Die, now up against the famous Shakespeare play, directed by Fabio Cavalli. At the end of the event, the actor/inmates will send a livestreamed greeting to the MAXXI audience (open with accreditation in both venues). The event is the result of a collaboration between the Fondazione Cinema per Roma, the Department of the Penitentiary Administration and the Department of Philosophy, Communication and Drama at the Università degli Studi Roma Tre, and is produced by La Ribalta – Centro Studi Enrico Maria Salerno. From Tuesday, October 31 to Thursday, November 2, screenings from the Rome Film Fest lineup will be open to the public as well at the Rebibbia Auditorium. Free admission to all events on a first-come, first-served basis, but reservations are required.

Rebibbia Femminile (Women’s Ward) – “Melograno” screening room
On November 3 at 11 am, the Rome Film Fest comes to the “Melograno” screening theater in the Women’s Ward of Rome’s Rebibbia Prison which was inaugurated last March 8 in collaboration with the Fondazione Cinema per Roma. With the inmates and students at Roman schools and universities in attendance, one of the films on the Rome Film Fest lineup will be screened, along with the short SalviAmo la faccia made by the women who are inmates in the prison and directed by Giulia Merenda.
The event is part of the project “SalviAmo la faccia” against gender-based violence and for women’s empowerment, promoted by the Department for Equal Opportunities of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers and involves roughly sixty inmates, including the transsexuals’ section. The project is a joint effort between the Cpia1 in Rome (the Provincial Center for Adult Education) and “Ossigeno per l’informazione”.
POLICLINICO UNIVERSITARIO AGOSTINO GEMELLI | GEMELLI HOSPITAL
The 2017 Rome Film Fest launches an extraordinary collaboration with Rome’s Policlinico Gemelli Hospital, offering its patients screenings of two films from the official Rome Film Fest lineup, selected for just this special audience and synchronized with their premieres at the Auditorium Parco della Musica. Since April 2016, in fact, the Policlinico Universitario A. Gemelli in Rome has had a bona fide screening theatre on the hospital premises with screenings scheduled – starting September of the same year – twice a week, on Tuesday for all patients and on Thursdays for paediatric patients. The programming of films concurrently with their release in city theatres – thanks to a generous collaboration between the hospital and all the production companies and distributors – is reserved for patients, their families and friends. It represents an innovative treatment tool that accompanies the traditional therapies and gives inpatients the feeling of relief that this break from their normal routine provides. The method itself and the management of the program being developed on a national level is entrusted to MediCinema Italia Onlus, which has simultaneously promoted a research project coordinated by the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, in a collaboration with the hospitals in other cities where MediCinema already operates.

CREATIVITY AND CULTURAL GROWTH IN EUROPE: WHAT ROLE CAN PUBLIC SERVICE PLAY
MAXXI | October 28, 9.30 am
Saturday October 28th, as part of Eurovisioni XXXI, the Rome Film Fest, in a joint initiative between the Department of Cultural Growth of the City of Rome and Eurovisioni, will host a seminar on the theme: “Creativity and cultural growth in Europe: what role can public service play?”. A conversation, moderated by Luca Bergamo, between the public broadcasting service, industry, observers of the audiovisual sector and cultural policy promoters to establish the degree to which radio and television still fuel creativity in Europe today and impact national cultural vitality.
In the digital era, traditional modes of production, distribution, promotion and consumption of cultural products are being disputed. In this new context, it is more important than ever to stimulate and sustain the cultural creativity of a country and give all its inhabitants the possibility to enjoy it and/or participate. But how? The seminar will include presentations of some of the more significant current experiences of creative collaboration between television and cultural institutions, and will attempt to answer some of the following questions:
– With the thousands of channels available on internet today, for which the younger generations are producing and enjoying pieces of television online and where everyone creates their own programming, can the public service still be the primary vehicle for the production and dissemination of culture, creativity, and imagery at the national level, guaranteeing quality and reliability, and how?
– Is the tradition model of Public Service as the funder of cultural production still adequate or does it need to be called into question?
– Can the new distribution platforms replace national television networks even though they deal almost exclusively with distribution, and completely ignore production?
– Is it just a matter of shifting more funding from multimedia Public Service to independent producers (as proposed by the Italian Minister of Culture), or is the issue rather the need to develop new modes of widespread participation and to provide incentives for the creativity of individual citizens, taking advantage of the new opportunities offered by digital media
– Will the current system of rules for subsidizing cultural production survive the expansion of e-commerce and globalization?
– The language: until now, language and cultural experience have been closely related. Will that be true in the future? Or will the use of English replace the linguistic separation that lies at the foundation of today’s cultural diversity?
CRITICAL CONDITIONS: FROM NEWSPAPER TO SMARTPHONE: FILM REVIEWS, FILM CRITICISM AND VIDEO ESSAY
Film criticism from magazines, newspapers and mass media to books and the web: how does the medium change the message? Is the written form the best one to inform, review and convey the work of academics? Are film criticism books solely and ultimately meant for an academic audience? And can YouTube and creative video editing eventually give a new form to traditional film reviews?
Following last year’s successful experience, the Critical Conditions panel – which we wish to turn into an annual moment to talk about the contemporary state of film criticism and cinema – is back with a new event featuring Annette Insdorf, Professor of Film Studies at Columbia University and author of Cinematic Overtures: How to Read Opening Scenes (Columbia University Press), A.O. Scott, chief film critic at The New York Times, who wrote Better Living Through Criticism (Penguin Press), and Paolo Mereghetti, chief film critic at Corriere della Sera and author of the renowned Italian film dictionary “Il Mereghetti”. Mario Sesti – Artistic Coordinator of the Selection Committee and Retrospective Curator – will moderate the conversation involving an audience of movie critics and film buffs and opening the discussion to questions and remarks.

WORK, TALENT AND CREATIVITY
Auditorium Parco della Musica – Sala Petrassi | 27 October
The theme of the future of the professions in the film and audio-visual industries will be the focus of the conference organized on October 27th by the Fondazione Cinema per Roma, as part of the Rome Film Fest, with the support of the MISE – Ministry for Economic Development and the ITA–ICE Italian Trade Agency, and with the participation of institutions, associations, professionals and leading figures in the field. The panel will be introduced with a report by Bruno Zambardino, who will present the research study “Il Capitale Umano”, which he coordinated, and which was developed by A.S. For CINEMA with the contribution of the Ministry for the Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism – General Direction for Cinema. The report provides a survey of the professional fields in the film and audio-visual industries, exploring the evolution of their various components. The audio-visual industry today has become an integrated activity, not limited to just film and television, but involving other productive fields, from the music industry to publishing, from the gaming industry to merchandising. This complexity therefore requires different professional skills and new areas of expertise. The panel will revolve around the prospects for development and the professional evolution of the film and audio-visual industry, as well as the necessary formulation of new educational programmes, addressed mainly to young people. Participants will include ANICA, APT and Istituto Luce Cinecittà. The new organization of Cinecittà, with the revitalization of the Studios, the inauguration of the MIAC (Italian Museum of Audio-visual Arts and Cinema), and the project for laboratories and workshops specifically dedicated to training new professional figures, is one of the more significant elements in the new prospects for the entire sector, which not coincidentally indicates the highest level of employment to be in the Lazio region, on a level with the Lombardia region. The conference will also deal with the latest news regarding the new law for cinema and its possible upshot in terms of employment, and with the strategic role of the Film Commission in attracting resources and promoting the extraordinary specificity of Italy as a country. Lastly, the event will feature the finest Italian professionals in their fields and by prestigious protagonists of Italian craftsmanship in cinema, recognized internationally.

IL LAVORO CHE VOGLIAMO | THE JOBS WE WANT
AuditoriumArte – Auditorium Parco della Musica | October 27, 11 am
Once upon a time there were factories. There were steady jobs. And there still are, but in Italy the advent of the fourth industrial revolution is changing the very notion of work, now more and more precarious, with workers losing their rights and their dignity. The Jobs We Want by Andrea Salvadore turns the camera on eight different working environments: different places in Italy, different business structures, different histories.
In the Lombardia region, it looks at the start-up D-Orbit and the historic textile maker Lubiam; in the Marche the pasta factory in Campofilone and the tech company Loccioni, with its solutions for health and home; in Calabria, the biology firm Goel’s cooperative; in Tuscany the BB Holding for precision mechanics; and in the Veneto, the pharmaceutical Zambon and the Centro Polifunzionale Civitas Vitae, which has revolutionized elderly care. It is a documentary and all-Italian story of the men and women who try come up with “dignified” work, as described in the Catholic Church’s social teachings and in the Italian Constitution. Following the screening of the documentary, there will be a debate between CEI president Archbishop Gualtieri Bassetti; the director of TV2000, Paolo Ruffini; journalist Filippo Gaudenzi and filmmaker Andrea Salvadore. The event is organized by TV2000.
FIGHTING VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN
The Rome Film Fest expresses its commitment to fighting violence against women by hosting three events in which cinema, with the power of the stories it tells, is a primary force in creating awareness of the issue of respect towards women.
SARA
by Stefano Pistolini and Massimo Salvucci, Italy, 2017, 62’| Doc|
“I have never seen such a heinous crime” says Luigi Silipo, commander of the Roman Police force. He is referring to the murder of Sara Di Pietrantonio, the Roman girl murdered by her ex-boyfriend in the early morning hours of May 29th, 2016, yet another link in the chain of femicides that holds our society captive. Sara provides a reconstruction of the facts and seeks to understand the motivations, avoiding any scandal-mongering overtones. The focus is on the people involved: it is an effort to describe and identify the causes of this epidemic of violence against women. The film will be broadcast on November 26th, on the occasion of the day of national awareness and mobilization against violence towards women, on Real Time, channel 31. At the end of the screening, there will be a panel with Concetta Raccuia (Sara’s mother), Dacia Maraini, Senator Francesca Puglisi (President of the Parliamentary Commission to Investigate Femicides), Daniele Autieri (co-author of the documentary). Sara is written by Daniele Autieri, Stefano Pistolini, Giuseppe Scarpa.
MA L’AMORE C’ENTRA? | IS IT ABOUT LOVE?
by Elisabetta Lodoli, Italy, 2017, 52’
Three men tell their stories: their lives blew apart when they battered their partners but then they got scared and decided to try and change. Three perturbing stories of everyday life that explore our sentimental education and cross paths in the place where the men sought help.
DOPPIA DIFESA – UCCISA IN ATTESA DI GIUDIZIO
by Andrea Costantini with Ambra Angiolini and Alessio Boni
The Fondazione Doppia Difesa, a foundation committed to fighting violence against women, will be at the Rome Film Fest to present the film produced by Camaleo, Uccisa in attesa di giudizio by Andrea Costantini, starring Ambra Angiolini and Alessio Boni, and inspired by the campaign launched by Doppia Difesa to prevent women from being killed before justice is served. On this occasion, there will be an encounter on the themes of justice and violence against women. The Doppia Difesa Foundation was promoted in 2007 by actress Michelle Hunziker and lawyer Giulia Bongiorno to help women who have suffered discrimination, violence and abuse, but don’t have the courage, or the capacity, to begin the process of reporting it to the police.
“ROMARCORD”. HISTORY AND MEMORY OF ROMAN MOVIE THEATRES
The first episode in the documentary made by the film students at the Università “La Sapienza” in Rome (Department of Art History and Performing Arts). Divided into neighbourhoods and zones of the city, Romarcord is an account of the history and memory of Roman movie theatres, as they remain in the memory of the spectators. An archive of voices, memories, images that is not a “de profundis” for the movie theatre, but a body of considerations that can help to revitalize them. A social history of the movie theatres of times gone by, seen through the eyes of today’s young people, interwoven with the history of the city’s urban fabric. The screening will be followed by a debate on the theme of the documentary. Project curated by Andrea Minuz and Damiano Garofalo.
65 TIMES ANAC: THE HISTORY OF ANAC THROUGH THE EYES OF ITS FILMMAKERS
For its sixty-fifth anniversary, the National Association of Italian Filmmakers (ANAC) has launched a four-part documentary film project of which 65 Times ANAC is a synthesis, yet unfinished, that nevertheless reveals what the definitive work will look like. In the film, the story of ANAC starts from the years prior to its founding right down to the present day. The bulk of the documentary consists of first-hand accounts and interviews featuring some of ANAC’s historic members and exponents: Carlo Lizzani, Ettore Scola, Callisto Cosulich, Mino Argentieri and Emidio Greco; as well as Citto Maselli, Ugo Gregoretti, Nino Russo, Massimo Sani, Giovanni Arnone, Cecilia Mangini, Otello Angeli, and Virgilio Tosi. The idea for the film, the filming itself, the directing and the editing are all the result of a collective effort coordinated by Francesco Ranieri Martinotti, Pierpaolo Andriani, Tino Franco, Giuliana Gamba, Alessandro Rossetti, Giacomo Scarpelli, and Alessandro Trigona, with the aid of some of ANAC’s younger members who represent the next generation of the association: Francesco Abbonante, Carlo Barbalucca, Francesco Gallo, and Valerio Principessa; as well as a group of young people from Cinemonitor, supervised by Roberto Faenza.
The screening of 65 Times ANAC will be followed by a talk hosted by Mario Sesti, featuring speakers Francesco Ranieri Martinotti, Giuliana Gamba, Alessandro Rossetti and Giacomo Scarpelli, along with historic ANAC members such as Citto Maselli, Ugo Gregoretti and Giuliano Montaldo.
