Models Carl and Yaya are a couple invited on a luxury cruise with a bizarre group of the ultra-rich. At the beginning, the crew makes it a pleasant excursion, but on the evening of the gala dinner a storm comes on and events take a surprising turn, as the roles are reversed and power changes hands.
COMMENTARY
A male and a female model: an attractive, elegant young couple, but conflicted and quick to fight. They join a Mediterranean cruise for billionaires, oligarchs and entrepreneurs. Cut to a bad storm; and survivors of the shipwreck on a desert island. These three chapters form the film that won the Palme d’Or at Cannes in 2022. It’s a wildly satirical collage, patterned on Östlund’s previous films, Force Majeure and The Square (another Palme d’Or winner). It’s got upstairs and downstairs, the cruise ship’s gleaming halls and the kitchens, laughs and sneers; whites, blacks, and Asians, capitalism and Marxism – a sexual, surreal class struggle. An audacious ensemble film with brilliant dialogue and Woody Harrelson at the top of his game, especially in his drunken debates with the rich Russian passenger.
RUBEN ÖSTLUND
Born in Sweden in 1974, Ruben Östlund directed his first narrative feature film, The Guitar Mongoloid, in 2005. All of his feature films after that would premiere at the Cannes Film Festival: Involuntary (Un Certain Regard), Play (the Directors’Fortnight), Force Majeure (the Un Certain Regard Jury Prize), The Square, and Triangle of Sadness, the last two of which both won the Palme d’Or.
DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT
A friend sat next to a plastic surgeon at a party, and he said, “You have a quite deep triangle of sadness”. He was referring to a wrinkle between her eyebrows. It suggests you’ve had a lot of struggles in your life. I thought it said something about our era’s obsession with looks.
